Biography

Born in Johannesburgh, South Africa. Came to England and studied at the Slade School of Art in 1916-18. Whilst there Wolfe was invited by Nina Hamnett to join Roger Fry's Omega Workshops, with which he first exhibited in 1918. In 1920 solo exhibition at Leon Levson's Gallery in Johannesburg. Wolfe showed extensively in Britain and abroad in mixed and solo shows. Elected RA in 1972. Retrospective exhibition organized by the Arts Council in 1967 and in 1997 at Paisnel Gallery. Tate Gallery and many other public galleries hold his work. (see Art UK) EDWARD WOLFE (1897-1982) painted the original twelve drawings in ink, gouache on Chinese silver paper in 1930 to accompany a new translation of the text by the novelist and poet Louis Golding. Unfortunately, this book was never printed. These were subsequently exhibited in a Edward Wolfe Arts Council Exhibition in 1967. Wolfe wanted to achieve the same effect with the prints on silver background, but he was advised of techinical difficulties with printing. It was not until he met a number of years later the master printer Adrian Lack of The Senecio Press that it became possible to lithographically produce this portofolio. Experts who have seen the proofs were struck by the faithfulness to the originals. Thus 250 copies of the twelve drawings were printed 50 years after their execution. These portfolios were sold by Royal Academy.
