Biography

Stephen Crowther was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire. Studied at the College of Art there, in 1941 won the Royal College of Art scholarship. After war service in 1941-46, studied at Royal College under Gilbert Spencer, Rodrigo Moynihan and Carel Weight. From 1950-87 was a lecturer in drawing and painting at Cleveland College of Art & Design, Hartlepool. Was made a member of RBA in 1958 and became president of Hartlepool Art Club. In 1989 Crowther won a Higgs&Hill Bursary, being commissioned to paint Port Solent Marina in Portsmouth. Showed his work at Royal Academy, Leicester Galleries and elsewhere in mixed exhibitions. Exhibited solo at Gray Art Gallery & Museum, Hartlepool from 1967; Billingham Art Gallery in 1970; later shows included Middlesbourgh Art Gallery in 1984. His work is represented in a number of public collections (see BBC Your Paintings).
