Biography

Maggie Hamilton was born in Glasgow. Sister of the artist James Whitelaw Hamilton. Married the painter Alexander Nisbet Paterson and their daughter was the artist Viola Paterson. In the late 1890s became famous for her embroideries in Chinese Silks. In 1901 exhibited her work at the Glasgow International Exhibition. In 1920s and 30s continued to paint still life subjects. Showed her work widely at the Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts as well as RA and Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. In 1982 her works were exhibited at the Centenary Exhibition Glasgow Society of Lady Artist.
