Biography

Sir William MacTaggart was born in Loanhead, near Edinburgh. In 1918 began to study at the Edinburgh College of Art, later studied in France and Italy. First exhibited at the RSA in 1921. Founder member of 1922 Group. In 1924 MacTaggart had a one man show in Cannes. Exhibited at the Connels and T&R Annan and Sons, Glasgow, Aitken Dott, Edinburgh and Stone Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne and many other public and private galleries. Knighted in 1962. Tate Gallery, Arts Council of Great Britain, Scottish Arts Council and Scottish Royal Academy, Harrogate Museum, Bradford Museum, Glasgow Museum and Laing Art Gallery, many other British and overseas art collections hold his work (see Art UK). Sir William MacTaggart produced a large number of dynamic drawings of Scottish landscape scenes that have become desirable to collectors. All drawings have a studio stamp on reverse.
